Drivers Receive DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate Same Day – If Certified
The DOT physical for commercial drivers is quite comprehensive. It includes: health history, vision test, hearing test, urine test, blood pressure screening, and an overall physical examination. Upon completion of the physical, our medical examiner will determine if a driver is medically fit to drive. If the examiner finds the driver fit, he or she will issue the DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (medical card) at the end of the exam. Please note, even if a driver is medically fit, certain exemptions may apply. For example, a FMCSA exemption is needed for drivers who are on insulin or who have acceptable vision in only one eye. Drivers who have an impaired limb, or who are missing a limb, need to apply for a Skill Performance Evaluation Certification.
What to Bring to the Exam
To speed up the certification process, it is important that drivers bring the following items to the physical appointment:
Driver’s license/photo ID
Paperwork from treating physician regarding any existing medical conditions
List of current medications, dosage, and length of time taken
Eyeglasses or contacts if applicable
Hearing aid if applicable
Current or expired DOT medical card
Any medical waivers or exemptions
Compliance of CPAP usage if applicable
If a driver has, or had, one of the following health conditions, he/she will also need to bring medical documentation that verifies current health status and ability to work, as well as a record of prescribed medications: illness/injury in the last five years, brain or head disorder/illness/injury, visual impairment/disorder, hearing impairment/disorder, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disorders/surgeries, muscular disease, lung disease, digestive issues, kidney disease, liver disease, sleep disorder, diabetes, depression, psychiatric disorder, dizziness/fainting, loss/impairment of limb, spinal/back injury, drug use, alcohol use.

Drug Testing for DOT ComplianceWhile drug testing is not part of the DOT physical exam, there are times when such testing is necessary. Federal rules require drug and alcohol testing for commercial drivers related to pre-employment, post-accident, unannounced random testing, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up as prescribed by a substance abuse professional. We offer drug testing at our NYC, Westchester, Rockland County and Orange County facilities, as well as on-site group testing. |
